Every Christians #1 First New Year’s Resolution? Seeking God’s direction or Without Seeking God’s Direction? Proverbs 3:5-8

Proverbs 3:5-8 Living Bible

4-5 If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don’t ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.

7-8 Don’t be conceited, sure of your own wisdom. Instead, trust and reverence the Lord, and turn your back on evil; when you do that, then you will be given renewed health and vitality.

The Word of God for the Children of God.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

Throughout our lives, we will continue to need God’s direction. Without God’s direction, we will be prone to get lost in our Christian walk. The good news is that God never leaves us, nor does He make our paths blurry. Instead, He makes our paths straight the more we lean on Him instead of our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-8).

Proverbs 3:5-8 Amplified Bible

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

[a]In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil.

It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.

First and Foremost; Turning to the Bible and going to God in prayer are the main ways to ascertain God’s direction. The Bible tells us the direct words of God and prayer enables us to speak personally with Him. By practicing these spiritual disciplines, we can sense where God is leading us. As we are following and obeying Him, it will be impossible to miss His guidance, direction, truth.

If you are seeking God’s direction today, you have come to the right place. Never doubt the Lord’s guidance—He will always lead us where we need to be.

Here are a few Bible verses to turn to when you need God’s direction. Through these passages, trust you will be directed by the Lord in the way you should go:

1. Psalm 32:8

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8

Whenever we need God’s direction, we can turn to Psalm 32:8.

In this ancient passage, we are told by God that He will instruct us, teach us, and counsel us.

Since this is true, we take comfort in knowing God is already directing our steps.

His direction has already been made known to us as we are following Him today.

He is instructing us and teaching us in the way we should go through the Bible.

It is also comforting to know God is counseling us with His loving eye on us.

This means God always has His eyes on us and is protecting us.

Never will the Lord fail us.

He is directing us and guiding us each day.

Listen to His gentle nudge and continue to follow Him. (1 Samuel 3:1-10)

God will keep you safe and protected as you continue to follow Him.

2. Psalm 37:23-24

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

If we are faithfully following God, He will make our steps certain.

Psalm 37:23-24 starts out by saying, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.”

What this part of Psalm 37:23-24 tells us is the Lord will make our steps firm if we are delighting in Him.

Those who delight in Him are those who love Him, obey Him, and follow Him.

If we are delighting in the Lord, He will make our steps firm and steadfast.

We also see that although we know we will certainly stumble, we will not fall.

The Lord will uphold us with His hand.

Therefore, even if we weave off course sometimes, God will place us back on the path we should be walking.

There will be times when we do stray; however, God will not allow us to fall.

Trust that He will straighten our paths and ensure His directions are known.

3. Jeremiah 10:23

“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

The prophet Jeremiah is calling out to the Lord. He tells the Lord he knows the people of Israel’s lives are not their own, it is not for them to direct their steps.

Instead, it should be God directing their steps.

The lives of Israel belong to Him just as the lives of everyone in the world today belong to Him. Never should we be as bold to say we should direct our own steps—instead, we need to wise up, look up, look forward, trust God’s instructions to allow the Lord to direct our steps (Genesis 12:1-3).

Allowing the Lord alone to direct our steps looks like faithfully following Him, obeying Him, trusting Him and loving Him. Jesus will direct our steps if we let Him. It might be hard to discern His direction at times, but as long as we are obeying Him, we can trust that we are following His direction in our lives.

God has detailed plans for each one of our lives, and He will ensure we follow the right directions in order to fulfill these plans (Jeremiah 29:10-14).

4. Proverbs 20:24

“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” Proverbs 20:24

Each and every step is directed by the Lord.

As the writer of Proverbs says, “How then can anyone understand their own way?”

While this can be a confusing statement, we can interpret it to mean that God will direct our steps even if we are not aware at the time.

This is because God will fulfill His purposes in our lives—even if we mess up, even if we don’t know what’s next.

Whether we fail or not, God will still work through us and ensure we are going in the right direction.

If you are unsure of where God is leading you today, go to Him in prayer.

Use Proverbs 20:24 as a passage to direct your prayer.

Trust the Lord will give you clarity and guidance.

While we will not know all parts of God’s will on this side of heaven, we can trust Him with our steps. His directions will guide us and make our paths level.

5. John 14:6

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

Our ultimate map is Jesus.

Since Jesus is “The Way,” we can know we are following the Father’s direction by obeying the Lord.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Trust Him, with baby steps, Follow Him with your entire heart today.

The Lord is the way to everything we need for our life and the life to come.

His directions will never fail us because He is our Good Shepherd (Psalm 23).

As you follow Jesus, don’t be afraid of where He leads.

Sometimes His directions might feel intimidating or scary, but resolve to make the choice to trust Him. Trust He will protect you and keep you safe. Whether He guides you to go on short and or long-term mission trips in distant lands, start leading a Bible study, or break away from a bad relationship, trust His direction.

God has a way of speaking to us and making His directions clear.

Listen to His voice and obey Him (Psalm 19).

God truly knows what is best for us, even if we don’t understand it at the time.

Go to Him in prayer, ask for His directions, and faithfully follow His leading.

The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are worthy of our trust.

God’s guidance in our lives will bring about our ultimate joy and sanctification.

The path might be difficult and strenuous at times; however, we can know God is working it out for our good (Romans 8:28).

Be it resolved then …

Choose to follow His direction today, see how your life changes for the better.

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Psalm 121 Authorized (King James) Version

Psalm 121

A Song of degrees.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,
from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord,
which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Behold, he that keepeth Israel
shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is thy keeper:
the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The sun shall not smite thee by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:
he shall preserve thy soul.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in
from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

Do we seriously want to learn how to say yes to God? Many of us do. But saying yes to what God asks may include saying no to what you want and to what others think is best…how do we simply say yes when it’s hard to do?

This is when things get hopelessly complicated right? It is so easy to go along with God’s program when we are on board, but what about when God’s “ask” requires us to risk too much, leave our comfort zones, or walk by blind faith?

Saying yes to God is a bold declaration. In our ‘wise’ finite minds, we have to be certain we know just what we are getting into before we claim we are “all in.”

What Does It Look Like to Say YES to GOD?

Since I am a person who constantly needs concrete, real-life examples, I have been praying, seeking God, and going back and forth into the Bible for some answers. I wanted to see what saying yes looks like. Does that make sense?

So I opened my link to Biblegateway.com, started by making a list of all the ordinary, flawed, messed up, scared, and insecure people in the Bible who said yes to God not knowing, suspecting, what it would mean for their lives.

People In The Bible Who Said YES To GOD

  • Noah said YES when God asked him to build the ark.
  • Abraham said YES when God asked him to sacrifice his only son.
  • Joseph said YES when God asked him to forgive his brothers who beat and sold him into slavery.
  • Moses said YES when God told him to go to Pharaoh and ask him to let the Israelites go.
  • Rahab said yes when asked to hide the Israelite spies and risk her own life and the lives of her family.
  • David said YES when God asked him to fight the giant Goliath with only a slingshot and a few stones.
  • Esther said YES when Mordecai told her to go to the king to save her people.
  • Daniel said YES when God told him not to bow down and worship other idols.
  • Mary said YES when the angel told her she would carry God’s son, Jesus.
  • The disciples said YES when Jesus asked them to leave everything behind and follow him.
  • Paul said YES when God asked him to deliver the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles.
  • Ananias said YES when Jesus told him to touch Paul’s eyes, restore his sight, begin his apostleship to the Gentiles, plant churches, write letters which eventually became the bulk of the New Testament, by far, the greatest evangelist of the 1st century church.

How Do We Say Yes to God?

Proverbs 3:5-8 Amplified Bible

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

[a]In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil.

It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.

First, determine to say no in your mind.

“A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out.” – Proverbs 25:28 MSG

I like how the New King James Version put it as well:

“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.”

That word “spirit” can also mean mind.

And isn’t that the truth.

If we can’t rule our minds, then we are defenseless against the enemy’s schemes. We are like a home with its doors and windows knocked in. Anyone can come in and steal and kill whatever they want. A person without the ability to control their thoughts is the exact same person that the enemy will go after.

Telling yourself no means confronting the thoughts that are not from God.

Thoughts of rejection, insecurity, doubt, self-doubt… these things are not from God. And if those thoughts are running amok, and rampant in our minds, we are actually telling God no! We cannot believe both the world’s lies and God’s truth at the same time. If we are accepting the lies, then we are rejecting God’s Truth.

Where in your thought-life do you believe lies?

Second, have faith in God’s promises.

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.“ – Hebrews 11:1

Saying yes to God means stepping out into the unknown; moving forward in something that you believe God is asking you to do (it’s confirmed in His Word).

When those young people stood up before the whole church, they had no idea where God was going to lead them. I remember in fall 2005 confessing to my pastor that I was planning to be a great evangelist because I didn’t see any women in my future. He just laughed and told me no! I married my wife 2010.

If you read Hebrews 11, you’ll see all those ‘heroes of the faith’ who have gone before us with faith to see things that were unseen at the time.

Take the Patriarch Abraham for example; God asked him to leave his country and go somewhere else to establish a new covenant with Him. BY FAITH Abraham obeyed and went out even though he did not know where he was going (Hebrew 11:8-9 and Romans Chapter 4)

Here are more verses for mediation.

Do we .01% believe God when he says these things? Do you trust that He is working all things for YOUR GOOD? That He does have a purpose in your life?

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”  –Isaiah 40:31

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”-Isaiah 43:2

Even our lack of faith cannot thwart God’s purposes.

All of the saints spoken of in Hebrews 11 were flawed humans just like us, and God still used them.

Why? Because they (some very reluctantly) continued to say yes to Him!

Exodus 3:1-12 Amplified Bible

The Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro (Reuel) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb (Sinai), the mountain of God. The [a]Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing flame of fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was on fire, yet it was not consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn away [from the flock] and see this great sight—why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he turned away [from the flock] to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then God said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet [out of respect], because the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

The Lord said, “I have in fact seen the affliction (suffering, desolation) of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters (oppressors); for I know their pain and suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand (power) of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a land [that is] good and spacious, to a land [b]flowing with milk and honey [a land of plenty]—to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me; and I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them.

The Mission of Moses

10 Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, and then bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And God said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve and worship God at this mountain.”

They ultimately rejected the lies of the enemy and continued to trust despite their very obvious and severe shortcomings.

This word is for us too.

This day, if God is asking you to move forward on something – say YES!

How will you know if God is asking you to say yes to something?

He will confirm it through His word.

Do not be shy to ask for confirmation, either!

Ask God to confirm what He is asking. He will do it.

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Psalm 8 Complete Jewish Bible

(0) For the leader. On the gittit. A psalm of David:

2 (1) Adonai! Our Lord! How glorious
is your name throughout the earth!
The fame of your majesty
spreads even above the heavens!

3 (2) From the mouths of babies and infants at the breast
you established strength because of your foes,
in order that you might silence
the enemy and the avenger.

4 (3) When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place —
5 (4) what are mere mortals, that you concern yourself with them;
humans, that you watch over them with such care?

6 (5) You made him but little lower than the angels,
you crowned him with glory and honor,
7 (6) you had him rule what your hands made,
you put everything under his feet —
8 (7) sheep and oxen, all of them,
also the animals in the wilds,
9 (8) the birds in the air, the fish in the sea,
whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

10 (9) Adonai! Our Lord! How glorious
is your name throughout the earth!

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

Authentically, Genuinely, Faithfully, Following God and Graduating Into Our God’s Life Long Desires for Us. Proverbs 19:20-21

It is graduation season.

It is a time for celebrating God and celebrating families, celebrating what we have learned and the prospect of living into our life’s dreams and aspirations for our soon to future.

Every true follower of Jesus Christ says he wants to do the will of God, yet most Christians think of God’s will as something that is imposed on them — something distasteful and difficult that they are forced to do.

They picture God demanding that they give in to a hard set of rules and conditions: “Do it my way or you’re on your own!”

How very wrong they are.

When a believer knows the glory of doing the Lord’s perfect will, he embraces it with joy and hope. To embrace means “to clasp, as in your arms” as an expression of love and affection.

God’s will is not just for ministers or deeply spiritual saints, but for all his children.

The New Testament exhorts us, “[God makes] you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight” (Hebrews 13:21).

God desires that you enter into his plan and will today.

The early apostles had one desire for all the churches — that every single member know God’s perfect will and embrace it.

Paul wrote of a brother named Epaphras “who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ … always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God” (Colossians 4:12).

Epaphras knew God had a perfect will for everyone in the congregation and that if they entered into it, they would find joy and have their needs met.

Christ told his disciples, “I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:30).

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (6:38).

There was never a moment in Jesus’ life when he wasn’t aware that his purpose on earth was to do the will of the Father. And this ought to be true of you and me as well.

Once you and I explore, discover, then embrace the will of God, something incredible happens—Jesus manifests himself to you and me in new ways!

Proverbs 19:20-21 The Message

20 Take good counsel and accept correction—
that’s the way to live wisely and well.

21 We humans keep brainstorming options and plans,
    but God’s purpose prevails.

The Word of God for the Children of God.

Adeste Fideles! Laeti Triumphantes! Venite Adoremus! Dominum.

Gloria! In Excelsis Deo! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Amen.

Life Is No Different than Building a Mansion of Cards

Proverbs 19:20-21 Amplified Bible

20
Listen to counsel, receive instruction, and accept correction,
That you may be wise in the time to come.
21
Many plans are in a man’s mind,
But it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand (be carried out).

We all have dreams and high aspirations for our lives.

Now that Graduation season is upon us in full force, dreams and aspirations are practically all that is being talked about, dreamt about, extensively planned out.

Some may dream of being a ballerina, a singer, an actress, a teacher, a doctor or a lawyer, successful business person, an accountant, a nurse or a social worker.

As many jobs and opportunities as there are, possibilities are literally endless.

As many careers and career paths there are we are only too limited by ourselves.

If you can think of it, they say, you can quite literally do anything when you put your heart, body, soul, mind and strength and resources to do that something.

High School and College students are often encouraged to have a 5-year or 10-year plan for their life, a backup plan if their first career goal doesn’t happen.

No matter what our age group, we all have dreams and aspirations we have high hopes of accomplishing – being successful, going into business for ourselves.

We do not want to be stagnant nor stagnated in our career paths – we deeply desire to prosper at what we set out to do in life and we will work very hard.

Sometimes we get the itch to try dream higher, aspire higher, to something completely different, something more exciting and challenging and fun too.

We will then plan our resources to go back into school for new career paths.

New vocational opportunities are always presenting themselves at various points in our life – we consider them – then decide on if it is the right time.

Ultimately, we are encouraged to go for our dreams and not to be distracted.

But what happens when we struggle, when our dreams are slow or slower to develop to bear our desired fruits, or slowed or in the end, do not come true?

Is all hope lost?

Should we just give up on our dreams and aspirations and throw in the towel?

Should we necessarily settle for a life dream far less than what we imagined?

I believe that depends on your perspective – worldly view or heavenly view.

There is a transition going on here which we may not be fully appreciating.

Aside from high school or university guidance and career counselors, are we “faithfully” making our own plans without consulting our faithful God first?

Are we faithfully praying to the Lord, asking Him to align our will with His?

As parents or step parents or grandparents of these new graduates, are any of us faithfully counselling the graduate to pray or are we praying with, for them?

The Bible says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).

Are we teaching our children from the Word of God about making wise choices?

Are we teaching our children from the Word of God about making hard choices?

Are we teaching our children from the Word of God the meaning, the wisdom of and behind the admonition of Jesus: “let your YES be YES and your NO be NO?”

Are we teaching children from the Word of God about God’s wisdom over ours?

Over-all, are parents teaching their children about life from the Word of God?

I believe those things include teaching children about the dreams of our hearts.

Then again, are we teaching and admonishing each other from the Word of God as adults to adults from and within whatever age groups these biblical truths?

How to raise children (of whatever their ages are) in the “way they should go?”

Teenagers are still somebody’s children and have to navigate an extraordinary level of life’s complexities – as do the young adults in their college age years.

Even more mature adults well into their careers and family’s require parental guidance from time to time as they make their own major life path decisions.

However, as much as our own life lessons taught us about pursuing our dreams, for graduates, it can be a great adventure that will only work if we put God first.

A few days ago, I remembered I heard a sermon from Pastor Steven Furtick.

In it, he said something that still resonates with me today.

When I heard it a few years ago, I recall in so many words, he explained,

“The Bible doesn’t tell us to follow our dreams. It tells us to follow God!”

After many fruitless efforts of trying it on my own, I found that to be true.

Raised in the USA, I have always heard phrases like, “Follow your heart” and “No pain – No Gain” “Take your passion and by all means, make it happen!”

But the older I got, the more I remembered my life’s “best efforts” then recalled how the Bible says that “the heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).

So, why are we so focused on what our heart desires?

The circumstances of life can change in less time than it takes for one heartbeat.

In the time it takes for us to take one short or long breath, our world, our own dreams, our own aspirations are undone, thoroughly being turned upside down.

Just ask the Patriarch Abram when He was commanded to leave his home and his family behind for some far off place which he had not one single clue where.

Just ask the Patriarch Job whose entire life was upended.

Just ask the Patriarch Noah when all of a sudden God told him to build an ark of immense proportions and do it alone- Did Noah possess those carpentry skills?

Just ask the Prophet Jonah when God commanded him to travel to Nineveh and to become everyone’s evangelist – demanding repentance and transformation?

And with Jonah, what if those desires of God were not even minimally believed to be any part of our own destinies – do we flat out reject God and all His ideas?

Whether we are teaching our children the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6) or as we are growing older and more mature we are planning for our retirements, we can easily be led astray by self if we let our hearts lead us instead of Jesus.

However, the Bible also advises all of His beloved Children to delight ourselves in the Lord (not self), and He will give us the desires of our hearts. (Psalm 37:4)

So there is hope – in the Lord much more so than hope in ourselves, right?

God cares about everything that affects us, including our 5-to-10-year plan.

He wants you and me to dream, not by following your heart but by following His heart first and foremost.

The Bible does not say we need to have everything single thing figured out.

But it does say we need to trust God in everything, more than we do ourselves and He’ll make our paths straight, it will be health to thy navel refreshment for our bones (Proverbs 3:5-8 KJV).

It gives me comfort and hopes to know God cares about my children’s dreams and my own and my wife’s and that He’s willing to give all of us the desires of our hearts according to His will – not one centimeter according to our own.

If my dreams and plans are outside God’s will for my life, they will not happen.

I am more than okay with that because the Bible says in Proverbs 14:12, “What you think is the right road may lead to death.” (GNT)

What a powerful point!

It helps me remember God knows best.

That the will of God is more faithful, more genuine, more authentic than mine!

The Genuine Article, The Authenticity of God’s Will

Sometimes the dream we desperately want to come true could end our lives.

We cannot see that from our limited human perspective.

However, we serve a God who can see the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), so counselling each other toward asking Him for His plans for our lives is vital.

You and I can rest assured God knows you better than you know yourself.

He knows what path will bring you the most joy and peace.

He knows the gifts and talents He’s given us and the best way those blessings can be discovered and explored, developed and encouraged, and be shared too.

Remember, God’s dreams for you and me are not just to help you and me to be an individual success story but also help the world by edifying God’s Kingdom.

If we encourage each other, ask Him to align our will with His, we will want to align, then realign our Kingdom dreams the same Kingdom dreams He wants.

Often, you and I may actually discover the dream God has for you and me is far greater than you or I could ever possibly imagine and will make us the happiest.

Our Authentic, Genuine, Faithful Alignment With God

1 Peter 1:6-7 The Message

6-7 I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.

Some things can only be tested by time.

If you have ever attempted to buy a new car, a house, or a dresser or cabinet at a reasonable price, perhaps you’ve considered whether to buy a used vehicle first, a secondhand piece for nearly the same price, a new piece from a discount store.

The problems associated with a new vehicle are obvious – you do not know how it was driven, how well it was maintained, traded in because of a nuisance issue.

The drawback is that such pieces of furniture may prove, when they’re opened and closed, have doors and drawers that are warped, won’t go back into place.

The vehicle may be clean and wonderful on the outside – but when driven off the lot for a couple of hundred miles – may quickly become a mechanical WOW!

We may find ourselves paying our favorite mechanic more than we first paid.

The item of furniture quickly becomes a real mess.

It may look good on the outside on first inspection, but the real issue is with its day-by-day use and what the test of time will show, which will prove whether you and I have the genuine article or an authentic unsellable, unusable, mess.

On the same note, how do we know whether or not our faith is the real thing?

The answer, at least in part, is that authentic, genuine faith is to be discovered in our day-by-day “opening and closing” “success and failure responses—in facing up to the subtle, not so subtle challenges and trials that come our way.

Some suggest, even teach and worse preach that victorious Christian living means the absence of trials—that if we are really men and women of authentic, genuine faith, then trials will be an uncommon experience because of “grace.”

Peter says the exact opposite is true: the experience of trials and difficulties is not uncommon, unusual, or unproductive in a Christian’s life, but is purposeful and an authentic and essential, absolutely genuine component, of God’s plan.

We must rigorously, vigorously teach this as preparation for Kingdom living.

We prove to ourselves and those who may be watching that our faith is genuine when we face challenges and refuse to run away, instead holding on to our trust in Christ’s goodness no matter how difficult the path He is leading us all along.

By such preparation, when (not if,) trials come and everything goes askew, we find out whether our testimonies and the professions we’ve made about God’s grace, peace, and securing providence are authentic, genuine, faithful to God.

Reverend Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote in Morning and Evening,

“The one who would glorify his God must be prepared to meet with many trials. No one can be illustrious before the Lord unless his conflicts are many. If, then, yours is a much-tried path”—that is, a path of many trials—“rejoice in it, because you will be better able to display the all-sufficient grace of God. As for His failing you, never dream of it—hate the thought. The God who has been sufficient until now should be trusted to the end.

Will your faith, will my own faith, will your graduates faith in God over self prove authentic, genuine through life’s current, coming greatest challenges?

By learning from success and learning from our failures, it is not only possible to hold on by God’s grace, but it is also profitable on account of God’s grace.

As we learn from success and failure, as we fall, but then learn how to raise again, as we trust in His grace, we will discover we can rejoice, because our happiness ultimately is not tied to circumstances but found in persevering in your faith—in knowing the sufficiency of Christ in circumstances would never would have chosen, in looking forward to the day when your Savior is revealed.

What dreams and aspirations has God placed on your heart?

What dreams and aspirations has God placed on your graduates heart?

How does it bring you hope to know following God’s plan for your life is best?

How does it bring the promise of hope to your graduate to know God’s will?

What hopes and aspirations and dreams does it raise up inside my own heart?

What about all the opportunities, possibilities, the Holy Spirit just revealed?

“Come Holy Ghost My Heart is Now Inspired – Come, Let us Build a Mansion.”

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Father God, We pray for graduates in their walks with You. Give them a hunger to know You more deeply, more intimately, and more personally than they ever have before. We know that You are the Living Water that can quench their spirits, and Lord we pray that You would pour out Your Spirit upon them.  We pray that they would see their lives in the present and in retrospect with the full comprehension that You are working and weaving things together for their good. We pray for them to have a strong relationship with You that will withstand any storms life throws at them.

God Will Keep You In Perfect Peace Those Whose Minds are Steadfast. Isaiah 26:1-4.

Peace is possible even in our stressful, troubled world.

In Isaiah 26:3-4, the Bible promises God “will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Here some thoughts about what it means for us to do that, so so can experience peace in any situation.

Isaiah 26:1-4 English Standard Version

You Keep Him in Perfect Peace

26 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a strong city;
    he sets up salvation
    as walls and bulwarks.
Open the gates,
that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in.
You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
    because he trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

The Word of God for the Children of God.

Adeste Fideles! Laeti Triumphantes! Venite Adoremus! Dominum

Gloria! In Excelsis Deo! Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia, Amen.

What a wonderful and sure promise we receive and prayerfully welcome and claim as our own from God’s Living Word that He keeps us in perfect peace.

Oh, don’t we long for that?

I just think about all of the unknowable, unsearchable unknowns in my life.

Also, I think, sometimes even enter the realm of obsession, about things I’m wrestling through, decisions that I need to make, those sorts of things where there can be this turmoil, and worry, or anxiety, and as I talk with folks, I know.

I mean, who is it among us who cannot say that fear, worry, anxiety, our mental health, are not some of the most pressing issues within our hearts, and minds.

We are constantly wondering, what’s going going to happen here or there?

How am I going to get this or that done?

When am I going to get this or that done?

What do I do in this decision or that decision?

How do we address this in my life or my family?

Or, what do I do at work?

Or if we are about to be blessed by our High School or College graduations, what will become of our futures when we are the ones who have to make the choices?

Peace.  It’s something people crave.

I’ve written about it in many of my devotionals, and I have received multiple messages and questions and debates about it from literally all over the globe.

But let’s take a fresh look at it in context of this verse.

What does it mean to have Perfect Peace?

Isaiah 26:3 is known as the perfect peace scripture.

It gives us directions for finding that perfect peace that keeps you calm even when life’s storms are swirling around you.

The secret to finding this peace is keeping your mind on God.

God will keep you in perfect peace when you keep your mind on Him and trust Him with everything in your life.

In Isaiah 26 we meet God’s prophet, Isaiah is rehearsing a song of trust in the provision of God.

He is prophetically singing of how God will restore Israel, who will once again walk in righteousness and peace.

After the coming judgement for their sin, a day will dawn when Israel will be redeemed and restored, they will be at peace when their eyes are fixed on God.

This promise was given to Israel during a very dark period in Israel’s history.

Meaning of Perfect Peace in Hebrew

God promises that we can have perfect peace, and even be kept in a place of perfect peace in Isaiah 26:3.

In the original Hebrew text, the term “perfect peace” is actually shalom shalom.

This shows how in the Hebrew language repetition communicates intensity.

It isn’t just shalom; it is shalom shalom, “perfect peace.”

It is as if God wasn’t satisfied to give us one door of peace to walk through; He opened up the double doors of peace and said “shalom shalom.”

If one assurance of peace is not enough for us, He will follow it with a second and then put on top of those two the very steadfast promise to keep us there.

Perfect peace, which is the peace of God, coming only from God, only comes when our anxious minds are set on Him and when we put our trust in Him.

This peace doesn’t necessarily correlate to what is going on around us.

It’s something we experience inside.

Our outward situation does not, or rather should not, determine the peace that we experience.

We can’t get away from what’s going on in our world right now.

The news is filled with stories about socio-cultural, socio-economic upheaval.

At every corner and with every plan we try to make, we can’t get away from the reality that we are experiencing uncertain times.

And uncertainty usually does not lead us to peace.

In fact, it has quite the opposite effect.

Uncertainty creates anxiety, fear, overwhelm, excessive worries.

But when we put our trust in Christ and set our minds on Him, we can have peace.  Even if, even when, everything around us tells us to do otherwise.

Still, how can we do this?  We must take control of what we put in our minds.

Isaiah 55:1-3 English Standard Version
The Compassion of the Lord

55 “Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.

It’s important that we fill our thoughts with God’s Word.

It is important that we fill our thoughts with the things of God.

It is important that we all fill our hearts with the Way, the Truth, the Life of His Son, Jesus who is the Christ, who is our Lord of Lord, King of Kings, our Savior.

The Truth will always be we cannot hide from what is happening in the world.

We need to educate ourselves, to discipline ourselves and follow the guidelines we have been given, but we can’t allow the fear and worry alone to consume us.

We must put our trust in God.

Proverbs 3:5-8 English Standard Version

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh[a]
    and refreshment[b] to your bones.

Every time thoughts invade our minds that distract and discourage us, we need to replace them with truth from God’s Word – Have scripture ready and positive statements around you to remind you God is 100% good, Jesus can be trusted.

Our minds and spirits might feel like a chaotic jumbled mess right now, but we can have God’s perfect peace when we choose to focus those thoughts on Him.

Isaiah 26:3–4 Reminds Us We Can Find Peace In God

Amidst the impossible complexities of all the chaos, and all of the turmoil, there is a peace to be found in God that nothing in this world can rob you of.

Are you anxious or worried?

Of course you are!

Am I anxious or worried?

Of course I am!

Do you know God’s peace in every circumstance?

Probably, if not decisively and definitively not!

Do I know God’s peace in every circumstance?

Probably, if not decisively and definitively not

To be honest, I have to work hard on keeping God’s peace in my heart.

It doesn’t have to be an exceptional impending disaster that makes me lose my peace, it can be less life impactful irritations that’ll come across my path daily.

Why do I lose my peace?

Because without any effort at all, without any debates or second thoughts, I will have taken my eyes off God and focused directly on that distraction on my path.

Does this happen to you too?

Virtually guaranteed it does – it is quite literally inescapable.

We need to stop paying such a high rate of rent to that which distracts us.

Because there are infinitely better, more eternal housing alternatives for us.

Romans 5:7-10 English Standard Version

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Pray, rent all (un)available space in our hearts, souls and spirits unto God.

Far more than we need the debilitating complexities of chaos and disorder,

We need God’s supernatural peace, SHALOM SHALOM, that only He can give.

We need His, ‘shalom shalom’.

The good news is that we can have this perfect peace constantly.

We will have perfect peace when we keep your mind stayed on Jesus.

Jesus has already paid the rent and has paid the rent for all of eternity.

Keep your mind stayed on Jesus

What is consuming your thoughts?

Are your thoughts exclusively on your circumstances or exclusively on Jesus?

I find that when I sit in Jesus’ presence every morning and layout before Him all that concerns me, I can refocus my views, my circumstances in a different light.

We can redirect our minds and take the focus off our circumstances and look in faith in the Lord and His Word.

When your mind is stayed upon the Lord, steadfastly fixed on the Son of God, on the Spirit, it means it is firmly fixed and unwavering focused on the Lord.

It also means that we are fully leaning upon His eternity and trusting in Him.

I mean, we could go on and on.

I don’t know what’s going on in your life that turmoil tempts you.

But, today, and in the coming complexities of chaos, hear what God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are telling you through this verse from Isaiah 26:3–4, what else does it say to you, except that if you fully trust in God, keep your mind stayed on God, He’ll keep you in perfect peace because He is an everlasting rock.

So, I just want to encourage everyone today, no matter what’s going on in your life, find the Word of God, Read and Study the Word of God, and fix your eyes on Him, cause your mind to stay on Him, fully realize you can 100% trust in Him.

You can 100% trust in Him now.

You can 100% trust in Him tomorrow,

You can 100% trust Him with all of your remaining tomorrows because God is an everlasting rock, and in Him, His unchangeability, there is perfect SHALOM.

We need to trust God with our today and all of our tomorrow’s.

We cause more anxiety for ourselves when we distress over what might happen tomorrow.

As we seek God’s presence constantly, He will order our days and fill us with His strength and wisdom for all of life’s circumstances.

It will definitely take an active discipline on our part to keep our minds, souls steadfast and unwavering focus on the Lord but Jesus wants to help us with this discipline too, we just have to fervently, unceasingly pray, and ask for His help.

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Psalm 18:1-6 The Message

18 1-2 I love you, God—
    you make me strong.
God is bedrock under my feet,
the castle in which I live,
    my rescuing knight.
My God—the high crag
where I run for dear life,
    hiding behind the boulders,
    safe in the granite hideout.

I sing to God, the Praise-Lofty,
and find myself safe and saved.

4-5 The hangman’s noose was tight at my throat;
    devil waters rushed over me.
Hell’s ropes cinched me tight;
    death traps barred every exit.

A hostile world! I call to God,
I cry to God to help me.
From his palace he hears my call;
my cry brings me right into his presence—
    a private audience!

Amidst the turmoil, amidst the waves, so to speak, of this world, there is a peace to be found in God that nothing in this world can rob you of. So, we pray, God, we look to you as the everlasting rock. We trust in you. Help us to trust in you with all of our hearts, even amidst the unknowns and things we don’t know around us, even amidst the things where we are tempted to worry. We’re anxious and confusion creeps in. What do I do here or there, God?

We pray for your peace. I pray for your peace. For those who are listening to this right now, I don’t know what’s going on in your life, but I know you’ve promised to keep them in perfect peace when they focus their mind on you, when their hearts trust in you, so help them. Also, help them to trust in you. I pray this for every single person who’s listening to this right now. Please, God, help them to trust in you. Keep their mind focused on you.

May this promise from your Word of perfect peace encourage them today, embolden them today even, amidst all the things going on around them that you would captivate them with your perfect peace. We praise you as the everlasting rock. We trust in you. God, oh, together we say, we trust in you. And we praise you for the peace that’s found in trust in you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

20/20 Hindsight. The “Right Ways” and The “Wrong Ways,” All the “Ways” that Seem So Right to Us. Proverbs 14:11-13

Proverbs 14:11-13 The Message

11 Lives of careless wrongdoing are run-down shacks;
    holy living builds soaring cathedrals.

12-13 There’s a way of life that looks harmless enough;
look again—it leads straight to hell.
Sure, those people appear to be having a good time,

Reflections: 20/20 Hindsight and Run Down Cabins in the Woods

Many of us have had moments when we have looked back on a past decision and wondered, “How did I ever think that was a good idea?”

Yet at the time, that decision or choice probably seemed right to us.

There’s a reason why people say, “Hindsight is 20/20.”

This means that you and I can often see a situation more clearly (as with 20/20 vision) after it has passed and you have had time to learn and also lament from some of the choices or lack of choices you have or have not made.

Our own ability to see clearly in the present moment is limited.

And what appears to be a right decision or right thinking in the moment can sometimes do more harm than good.

There is a reason why people also seriously lament that “Hindsight is 20/20.”

Paint a portrait “Hindsight is 20/20” for your living room wall might look strikingly, an infinity mirrored vision of one man looking at his own back.

illustration of man reflecting himself in the mirror, loop surreal concept

9-13 But in the end, does it really make a difference what anyone does? I’ve had a good look at what God has given us to do—busywork, mostly. True, God made everything beautiful in itself and in its time—but he’s left us in the dark, so we can never know what God is up to, whether he’s coming or going. I’ve decided that there’s nothing better to do than go ahead and have a good time and get the most we can out of life. That’s it—eat, drink, and make the most of your job. It’s God’s gift. [Ecclesiastes 3:11-13 Message]

Solomon was a wise son who paid attention to his father, David.

He also sought to be a wise father by sharing his wisdom with his own sons and compiling his own set of righteous guidelines and the learned sayings of others, into a compendium, then, today, and tomorrow, is called the Book of Proverbs.

He did this to encourage his own children towards righteous living.

Reverence for the Lord our God and trust in His Word is the foundation upon which true wisdom is based and we in the Church age have discovered that in our Savior Christ Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Living and Learning from our wise and foolish choices in life are of a true and lasting benefit and these ‘Proverbs of Solomon’ are an amazing collection of maxims for profitable living – ancient learning from the wisest of the wise.

They cover an extraordinarily wide range of subject matter which can surely help the reader to prevent foolish behaviour and ungodly decisions in areas like relationships and friendships, laboring, working, finances, and a fruitful life.

This not only pleases God and demonstrates faith in His Word, but gives every day measured advice on peaceful living while avoiding troublesome situations.

Like much of the book of the Proverbs, Chapter 14 is written in couplets which contrast wise and foolish behaviour.

We read a wise woman builds her home, but the foolish woman tears it down; the one who walks in uprightness fears God, while the devious despises Him.

This chapter also compares and contrasts a trustworthy witness with a false one, bitterness with joy, also foolish and wise attitude towards sin, and the inevitable destruction of wicked men with the upright man, who will flourish.

In this verse the couplet has a poignant twist, demonstrating the truly chilling consequences of self-deception.

It explains that a bad decision… which may seem to be a good and wise choice from a human perspective, will in fact result in disaster.

“There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

The collection of people in this proverb are deluded and devoid of true wisdom and understanding, which comes from God alone.

By falsely judging a situation to be beneficial, they find that the thing which appeared so enticing and which they thought was so right, had the opposite effect and only brought them to disaster.

This saying is a ‘stand-alone’ truth that is applicable to every man, but in order to discover the godly way to go, the correct choices to make, the true path that leads to life and light, peace and hope… the entire book of Proverbs needs to be seriously taken into account for it records every aspect of living a godly life.

Perhaps the key to the entire book of Proverbs, upon which all every piece of good advice is founded, is the truth Solomon taught his son in chapter 3,

Proverbs 3:5-8 English Standard Version

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh[a]
    and refreshment[b] to your bones.

Guidance for godly and ungodly living can be found throughout these Proverbs and it is attributed to lifelong observations of Solomon – the wisest of the wise by God’s gift [1 Kings 3:5-15] but also the very pinnacle of fools [1 Kings 11:1-4]

20/20 Examining Our Faith and How We Choose to Look at Things

Matthew 6:25-34 New King James Version

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one [a]cubit to his [b] stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not [c]arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Six years ago, in the atrium of our church one Sunday, I noticed one of our senior members standing quietly.

Her face wasn’t happy, but it was welcoming. I understood the look of tiredness and concern he showed.

Her husband of 63 years had just recently passed away from Lung Cancer.

She told me her 60 year old son was battling several serious health issues.

At 88 years of age, it was obvious that her own health was not robust.

And yet he was there, at church among the worshipers.

I reached out to shake her hand and asked, “How are you doing?”

Her less-than-enthusiastic response: “Okay, I guess.”

After a pause she stated bluntly, “I don’t care about anything anymore.”

Caught by Surprise, I asked, “Nothing?”

She shifted a bit and then said, “There was a time when I liked boats and cars and lots of things.

I got excited about them.

They kept our family together, gave our lives genuine meaning,

But they don’t mean anything to me anymore.”

I began to understand.

Material things no longer grabbed her attention.

Desire for stuff no longer preoccupied her.

As her husband suffered for so long with cancer, lost his ability to relate to others, and as he increasingly depended on others to care for his every need, she had grown to know the wearing and wearying effects of caring for him.

That she had to sometimes also care for her ailing son at the same time,

Her outlooks and perspectives on life had drastically changed.

Things decreased in importance, and relationships—with God, with family, with church—became her priority.

This sister was learning more deeply the meaning of seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and her quiet strength was truly heartwarming.

That at any age we should come to such a time in life where we are able to sit down long enough with ourselves and our Savior Jesus and seriously converse.

20/20 Hindsight … All Those Choices that Seemed Right to Us

Jesus warned his disciples that following him would not be easy or even look like a good idea at times.

He spoke about the costs of being his disciple, but he also promised that his way leads to life.

He said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

In other words, there will be many right and wrong choices that appear to be right (even religiously) and seem more attractive than the way of Jesus, but in the end they will bring grief and misery and destruction, poverty and despair.

We cannot just stop living life, making choices and making decisions simply because we fear for the future – we first line up all our infinite regrets in a row.

A spiritually stagnant Christian …

A steadfastly immovable, ice cold, immobile, spiritually stagnant Christian …

A steadfastly immovable, ice cold, immobile, spiritually stagnant Church …

Struggling mightily to rediscover their first choice, and how and why and where and when all salvation came by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, for there is no other name given among men whereby we must each be saved…

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Hoy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Heavenly Father, thank You for my great salvation in Christ and that in Him is found all wisdom and knowledge. Thank You for the many principles and precepts that are so helpful and encouraging in the book of Proverbs. I pray that throughout my life, I would Come to more wisely apply its wise concepts and trust in You in all things, and not seek to choose to do anything according to my own limited understanding. Give me discernment I pray, keep me from all forms of self-delusion and self-deception. May I never be foolish enough to journey along the paths that may seem right to me but ends in destruction. Thank You that You have promised to guide my steps and may my ear be ever open to Your direction. This I ask in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Proverbs is one of the most quoted books of the Bible.

Everyone seems to know or has heard those often-quoted words of wisdom and advice.

Did they really work for and during the times they were written for?

But would they really work in our most contemporary of internet times?

Can they be or are they still relevant and effective ?

Are they really wise words to live by as we close 2022 and enter into 2023?

Has anyone ever gotten any real success out of these sagacious verses written thousands of years ago?

Having Proverbs 3:6 During Hard Times

In the Bible, specifically in Proverbs, there is great wisdom concerning how to live a happy and peaceful and successful life – to be able to move through our failures and failings and arrive at a place where faith becomes first, foremost.

So much so one might find it unfathomable that people would not look forward to immersing their hearts and their souls and their lives into reading, studying, praying through, following, the wisdom this well-known Old Testament book.

Of course, not everyone reads Proverbs.

Consequentially, many never follow its prodding.

That is indeed a shame, for as we look at our world today.

Never has it been so necessary, so vital, to get to know the true powerhouse of Proverbs, what Go brings to our table of life and what miracles it has to offer.

God only knows, it is never merely individual humans who need advice and guidance; it is our families, neighbors, neighborhoods, church, entire world.

Today, let us reflect together about our spiritual journey: its beginning and destination, sharp turns, slowdowns, shutdowns, its challenges and blessings.

Today’s Scripture gives us a crucial piece of advice for every successful journey of faith.

Before we can start “driving,” we have to fully trust the Lord.

The Bible often calls the Lord our Shepherd.

In today’s terms, we could say God is our GPS.

God Positioning System ….

Trust in this GPS, and you and I will never get lost – just twisted around a bit!

The Lord warns us against thinking we are smart enough to figure out our own way. He tells us to turn to him in single every part of our life’s spiritual journey.

Acknowledge His GPS, He will make our path straight and will see us through.

As for me, there is one particular piece of advice from Proverbs that has carried me through countless challenges to my faith, through myriads of my failures.

When was the last time (do we remember the first time?) you an I ever noticed when we were on a good smooth road, and things were moving well, that a big bump or even a big pothole comes out of nowhere and messes up everything?

What if we arrived at a point on that “messed up” road where it felt like we were driving on cruise control at 65 mph driving from the eastern most to the most western point then from the most northern point to the most southern point of our country – and driving around in ceaseless circles – on the rims of our tires?

For a long time, I kept asking myself …. are all roads leading away from failure unto any success such ceaseless circles, is failure all I’m ever destined to know?

Is there any pathway which leads me away from such a dark, defeating cycle?

THE PATH TO WELLNESS ……

The grace of God is demonstrated by the fact that He has a plan and purpose for our lives that He wants to reveal to us.

It’s a pathway He’s designed specifically for each one of us, yet some of us may fail to consider this.

We find it too easy to move through life without giving God a second thought.

Instead of wondering whether our lives have counted for anything, we can all choose to believe that the Lord has the best plan for us, discover His path, and get on it as soon as possible.

If we don’t fully trust God, we will  be reluctant to follow the path He’s chosen for us.

Even though He always leads us the right way, our fears or uncertainty could cause us to sidestep His commands and opt for following our own course.

Proverbs 3:5-8 tells us what’s required to follow the Lord, what the benefits will be.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8 NKJV
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding” (v. 5).
 1. GOD COMMANDS US TO TRUST HIM

“Trust in the Lord” ProvERBS. 3:5a NKJV

  • Trust is a strong belief in someone’s integrity, ability, and character. This is the kind of confidence we are expected to have in the Lord. Then whatever He says or He also requires of us, we will prayerfully know with certainty that it is right.
  • If we lack that faith, lack that degree or measure of trust, we will not so innately or faithfully follow Him and will find ourselves living outside the will of God.
  • On the other hand, if we have spent some quantity and quality time, reading, studying, trusting, obeying Him, we can testify that He has never let us down.
  • Trusting God, is loving God in action. If we love God, we will trust Him.

“Loving God means keeping his commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3 NLT

“In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And His commands are not burdensome.” I John 5:3 NIV

“Every person who believes that Jesus is, in fact, the Messiah, is God-born. If we love the One who conceives the child, we’ll surely love the child who was conceived. The reality test on whether or not we love God’s children is this: Do we love God? Do we keep his commands? The proof that we love God comes when we keep his commandments and they are not at all troublesome.” 1 John 5:1-3 The Message

 2. THE BASIS FOR TRUST IN GOD IS HIS SOVEREIGNITY.

“Trust in the LORD” Proverbs 3:5b NKJV

  •  LORD = YAHWEH. The One Who Is. The Absolute and Unchangeable One.  The Existing, Ever-Living, Self-Consistent and Unchangeable God.
  •  He is the divine Ruler over all things and all people at all times.
  • His sovereignty is His wisdom, power, and righteousness all wrapped into one.
  • The Lord’s purpose is always right and good even if it doesn’t look that way from our perspective.

God says: “From the beginning I revealed the end. From long ago I told you things that had not yet happened, saying, “My plan will stand, and I’ll do everything I intended to do.” Isaiah 46:10 GN

“From eternity to eternity I am God.  No one can snatch anyone out of my hand.  No one can undo what I have done.” Isaiah 43:13 NLT

“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 NIV

3. THE DEGREE TO WHICH WE ARE TO TRUST GOD IS WITH ALL OF OUR HEART.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart” Proverbs 3:5b NKJV
  • Instead of so easily and instinctively relying on our own knowledge, perception, or reasoning, we should P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens) ourselves to place our total trust in the Lord.
  • This requires more than just agreeing with Him. We can actually agree with God about many teachings in the Bible without actually trusting Him. Agreement means we believe something is right, but genuine faith responds to that belief with action—do what God says because we trust Him to guide us the right way.
  • Wholehearted trust also means we cannot pick and choose areas we entrust to Him while trying to keep other parts of our lives under our control. It’s unwise to rely on our own perception because it is so limited, but God’s understanding is complete and eternal. Even when we do not fully comprehend or like what’s happening, we can still fully rely on His loving wisdom and respond in trust.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” Proverbs 3:6 NKJV
 4. IN EACH SITUATION, WE MUST FIRST ACKNOWLEDGE GOD
“In all your ways acknowledge Him” Proverbs 3:6a NKJV
  •  To acknowledge someone is to recognize him. But when we acknowledge God, we are not merely admitting that He exists but confirming He is our Lord who has authority over us and the right to give us direction in every area of our lives.
  • In each choice or situation, each success, each failure, failing, we acknowledge His sovereignty over them by surrendering to His will and trusting Him fully.
 5. “HE WILL MAKE YOUR PATHS STRAIGHT.” Proverbs 3:6b NKJV
  •  When we follow the Lord’s guidance, He protects us from side roads and eliminates obstacles and confusion along the way.
  • In basic terms, the straight path is the one of obedience. We may slide, stumble and slip into a few ditches along the way or need redirection, but God repeatedly and faithfully brings us back when we confess our change of heart, to obey Him.
  • His path is not always going to be easy to travel upon, but His forever promise is it is always going to be the best. If we think we can do a better job of plotting our own course for happiness and prosperity, it may look good, but eventually we’ll suffer the wear and tear coming from taking unprotected detours on our rims.

His Master Class after Master Class, after instructing us on what to do, God then gives us a poignant warning for our disobedience and a blessing for obedience;

 6. “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil” Proverbs 3:7a NKJV

“Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.” Proverbs 26:12 NIV

  • Whenever we choose our own way instead of trusting the Lord, we are playing the fool because your life does not belong to you. There are 2 masters in life

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” Matthew 6:24 NKJV

  • One day we are going to stand before God and give an account of how we lived.
  • If we’re wise, we’ll seek the Lord, listen to His directions, and trust Him. Since He cannot lie, we know that God will always keep His promises, and whatever He says is true.
7. “Fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.” Proverbs 3:7b NKJV
  •  To reverently fear God is to recognize and honor Him as not only the sovereign Ruler of the universe, but as the Only Lord and Only Savior of our lives.
  • If we truly believe this, we’ll turn away from sin and seek to live in obedience to Him.
  8. “It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones” Proverbs 3:8a NKJV

Every day we are faced with choices, and what we decide to do is based on whether we or not we believe God, that He has a plan for our lives and has chosen the best possible path for us, or we distrust Him, follow our own ways.

  • Whether we succeed or we fail, If we are willing to faithfully listen and trust Him, we will discover His faith-filled path leads to healing and refreshment.
  • Success or Failure, there will 100% be an underlying sense of peace, assurance, confidence, and satisfaction when we follow Him instead of going our own way.
Resolutions, Responses to Consider as we enter upon the New Year
  • Where do you find the most difficulty trusting God?
  • Why do you think it’s so hard to trust Him with this?
  • What promises in His Word could bring you assurance of His trustworthiness?
  • Does knowing God is sovereign over all the events in your life help you trust Him? Why or why not? Which of His other attributes motivate you to trust Him?
  • It’s easier to trust someone we know very well than someone we don’t. With this in mind, how well do you know the Lord?
  • Since the Scriptures are God’s self-revelation, what do you need to do to increase your trust in Him?

Sin has polluted our willingness to submit to the Lord.

The devil tempts us to implicitly trust our own way and intuition.

Our ever faithful God seeks to draw us to back to himself because he knows best.

By our Baptism in Jesus Christ, we are all constantly caught in a faith to failure back to faith tug-of-war, always leaning one way and then leaning the other.

There was a time when I thought I knew it all, but the one thing I did not know, would not acknowledge was God had a better way He was waiting to show me.

God’s Word taught me to more instinctively trust his GPS with the directions.

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

God, Author of my Life, God of all understanding, you have promised to give wisdom to anyone who asks. Well, I am now asking and indeed, I am pleading and praying. As I walk through life, give me wisdom and understanding in every decision I make. Guide those uncertain thoughts and redirect my misguided steps. When I experience failure, uncertainty and confusion, may I lean on your limitless wisdom. May your divine Holy Spirit be at work in me like a lamp to my feet and a shield to my mind. Help me to think clearly and calmly. Help me to act with confidence and wisdom. Help me to glorify you in everything I do. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, My Lord.

Adeste Fidelis! Venite Adoremus! Dominum

Gloria! In Excelsis Deo! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen.
