While We Are All Walking By Faith and Not By Sight, Are We Pondering any Prayers for Our Blindly Leaning, into Our Never to be Seen God’s Equipping? 2 Corinthians 5:7

2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Easy-to-Read Version

6 So we always have confidence. We know that while we live in this body, we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by what we believe will happen, not by what we can see. 8 So I say that we have confidence. And we really want to be away from this body and be at home with the Lord. 9 Our only goal is to always please the Lord, whether we are living here in this body or there with him. 10 We must all stand before Christ to be judged. Everyone will get what they should. They will be paid for whatever they did—good or bad—when they lived in this earthly body.

“Life is a Journey, Not a Destination”

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”

While each one of us on a journey in life, that journey does lead to a destination – either eternal life in heaven, or eternal torment in hell.

But our devotional text from 2 Corinthians 5:7, focuses on the journey.

Paul wrote to the young, heavily divided and struggling Corinthian church and said, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Whether we are a believer in God, or we do not believe in God, or we are right now struggling to believe or to continue to believe, every individual must now choose which path their journey will take – the path of life or the path of sight.

Walking by faith, living by believing in what will happen as opposed to seeing what will happen is like our leaving our homes, taking journey with a blindfold on, “walking in some direction” and trusting God to get you He’s leading you.

But if you leave your home, look at and pick your own direction, you walk by sight where you want to go, then you see the path and each step along the way.

You see what is before you – you see the potential obstacles, the potential risks and the potholes and the pitfalls – you see them and then automatically avoid.

But, how does all that change if you cannot see where you are going?

If you cannot assess the quality of the terrain and the environment you travel?

You can’t see the raised portions of the side walks which present a trip hazard?

You cannot see the puddles of water sure to get your socks, shoes and feet wet?

Where are the curbs you need to stop at to avoid walking into oncoming traffic?

Walking by what we can see is easy and such listed obstacles and threats to our physical health and spiritual wellbeing are otherwise so very easily avoidable.

Paul understood well this analogy on the Damascus Road when he went from walking by faith and fury after the new followers to sudden blindness courtesy of the risen Jesus when Paul encountered, experienced the very brightest light.

Suddenly and without explanation and with no time for defense of self, he was blinded by the incomparable light of the risen Jesus.

Now he could no longer rely on his vast knowledge of himself, his own survival skills to live and visually walk his own path and road from one town to another.

In an instant he was full of all the self confidence in the world, then reduced to that anxious and fearful someone who needed help with literally everything.

From immediate instant confidence into an immediate, instant helplessness.

He had no idea when or if ever he would regain his sight.

He had to figure out what all that change meant to the rest of his life.

And standing there on that Damascus Road, the risen Jesus left him with no instructions, no road maps, no guide books, no walking sticks, no nothing!

His companions took him to someone’s home and there Saul sat – in Prayer and in Fasting until some response was to come from somewhere, somehow.

The operative thing we each need to see is the choice of responses Saul had available to him and how he how fast and how instinctively he chose prayer.

We read nowhere in the Word of God Saul went into wild, flailing, hysterics.

His first instinctive response was to the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting.

How about our own most instinctive, most immediate response to any crisis?

Praying and Leaning into God’s Equipping

2 Corinthians 5:7 Easy-to-Read Version

7 We live by what we believe will happen, not by what we can see.

It is always disheartening to feel as though I have reached a significant point in my journey only to ask, “Now what, Lord?”

God has put a desire in my heart to write for Him which I cannot calm.

I wrestle and fight, clawing for any direction or insight or wisdom not my own.

God tells me to listen, watch, do the next thing, and wait. 

He reminds me not to worry about the future, but to wait on Him.

Obediently, I try my best to research, learn, write, pursue, listen, follow …and wait. 

I choose to trust Who is leading me, even when it feels like I am always walking with blinders on, I have no walking stick to use and I can’t see and cannot know and cannot watch the results of my efforts unfold before me and my own eyes.

God gave me the desire to write and keep right on writing, but it is up to me to raise up every morning to pray and to fast and to study, to put all the work in.

A work He promised to equip me for!  

Isaiah 55:8-11 Easy-to-Read Version

People Cannot Understand God

8 The Lord says, “My thoughts are not like yours.
    Your ways are not like mine.
9 Just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so my ways are higher than your ways,
    and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.

10 “Rain and snow fall from the sky
    and don’t return until they have watered the ground.
Then the ground causes the plants to sprout and grow,
    and they produce seeds for the farmer and food for people to eat.

The road and the devotionals can be can be long and precarious, and often we don’t know the destination … what God is going to do with them, but God does. 

He will equip us when we don’t feel capable or worthy of His calling on our lives.

Our calling is to do the work He has assigned us, wait for Him to clear the way.

I am learning to take each day as it comes, trusting Him to lead and guide my steps and my writings.

I try to plant my boots and my roots in securely into His ways and His truth.

I am too often overwhelmed with all the roads I could veer off onto, but He quietly reassures me with each effort that He alone will guide me through.

I feel dwarfed among thousands of Christian theologians, commentators and writers, but He gently tells me He’ll help my voice reach who it is intended for.

It may not be the masses; it may only be intended for one.

It may be for someone tomorrow; it may be for someone years down the road.

Philippians 2:12-13 Easy-to-Read Version

Be the People God Wants You to Be

12 My dear friends, you always obeyed what you were taught. Just as you obeyed when I was with you, it is even more important for you to obey now that I am not there. So you must continue to live in a way that gives meaning to your salvation. Do this with fear and respect for God. 13 Yes, it is God who is working in you. He helps you want to do what pleases him, and he gives you the power to do it.

God did not call me nor anyone and everyone else into something big only to leave us hanging and struggling on the side of some ditch to figure our life out.

He is not reliant on our human ability to pick the right road.

He works within us.

It is our calling to fully rely on God instead of ourselves.

It is our calling to fully relay on our Savior Jesus instead of ourselves.

It is our calling to fully rely on God, the Holy Spirit instead of ourselves.

Even when the road ahead of us is full of seen and unseen fog, seen and unseen potholes, pitfalls, stumbling blocks we can keep our both eyes fully on Jesus.

Psalm 121 The Message

121 1-2 I look up to the mountains;
    does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
    who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.

3-4 He won’t let you stumble,
    your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life! Israel’s
    Guardian will never doze or sleep.

    right at your side to protect you—

Even if we cannot nor ever see the words of the Psalmist before our eyes;

We can 100% trust Him with each day, task, and notion to do things for Him. 

In the name of God, the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,

Let us Pray,

Lord, You have placed a desire and calling on my life. I have heard Your voice and know the direction You want me to go. However, I am overcome by discouragement. I can’t see the road ahead and need Your strength to keep moving forward. I need Your sight, Lord, and Your leading. Forgive me, Lord, for taking hold of things that do not belong to me. Forgive me for striving in my power to try and manifest things that were never intended for me. Help me to see clearly what You have for me. I surrender my calling to You and place it securely in Your ever more wise, ever more capable hands. Reveal and inspire me with Your Holy Spirit. I trust You to equip me for all You want me to say and to do. You did not call me to do Your will because of my ability but because of my willingness. Take my worry and strife and turn it into glory-filled work. Give me discernment when I start to go down the wrong path. 

I rebuke the enemy and the distractions that he is placing in my path. I pray for strength against laziness or complacency. I come against the lies that enslave me, telling me I am not good enough, I don’t have what it takes, or that I will never get to where I want to go. I stand firmly on the truth and promise that You are with and will never leave me. I surrendered all my heart’s desires and ask You to lead every moment of every day. Thank You, Jesus, for Your everlasting love, and the many treasures of life You have stored up for me in the heavens I have never, ever seen.

Whether We Believe It or Not, God Does Have Incredible Plans for Us! Jeremiah 29:10-14

10 “For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years [of exile] have been completed for Babylon, I will visit (inspect) you and keep My good promise to you, to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call on Me and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear [your voice] and I will listen to you. 13 Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will restore your fortunes and I will [free you and] gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’

Some years ago the well-known author James Michener wrote a book called The Drifters.

It’s a story about young students traveling aimlessly through Asia and Europe, drifting from one day into the next, without either a plan or even any purpose.

Lots of people today are drifters too.

Even if you have everything life has to offer, you can feel unfulfilled and without purpose, drifting from one day to the next.

Or maybe you feel as if you’ve been cut adrift.

For example, maybe you’ve lost your job and you don’t see much of a future.

Or maybe you’ve lost your spouse through death, separation or divorce, and you feel as if you’ve reached the end of the road.

Perhaps you are in that place in life where you are feeling unfulfilled, at an age where perhaps you are considering a career change but you are unsure what the next career might be or you are struggling with how you are going to finance it.

Or maybe you just retired and you feel as if you’ve been put on a shelf.

Or perhaps you’re permanently disabled and you’re not sure how you can go on.

If you’re feeling adrift for one reason or another, take heart from God’s words to us through His Prophet Jeremiah: “I know the plans I have for you … plans to prosper you and … to give you hope and a future.”

God does not want us to drift through life.

He assuredly, definitely has a purpose and plan for each one of us.

Whoever you are reading this, ask yourself, “What does God have in mind for me? And how does God want to use me today so I can have hope and a future?”

God’s Presence in Our Plans

Jeremiah 29:10-11 The Message

10-11 This is God’s Word on the subject: “As soon as Babylon’s seventy years are up and not a day before, I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.

This quote was part of a letter God had Jeremiah write to the Jews whom King Nebuchadnezzar had been forcibly taken captive to Babylon from Jerusalem.

They had been ripped from their homeland, marched, walked, taken to a land where they were aliens and strangers.

I cannot imagine how hopeless they felt. (Psalm 137)

But God had already told them what to do when they arrived there.

What we do not know is how receptive this first generation of exiles were to the message of God, through Jeremiah, of a hope not manifesting itself for 70 years.

Jeremiah 29:4-8 Amplified Bible

4 “So says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the captives whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, 5 ‘Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there and do not decrease [in number]. 7 Seek peace and well-being for the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its peace (well-being) you will have peace.’ 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Do not let your [false] prophets who are among you and your diviners deceive you; pay no attention and attach no significance to the dreams which they dream or to yours,

He told them to build houses and live in them, plant gardens and eat their produce.

To get married and have children, then give their children in marriage to have more children, to multiply there, to not decrease in their population numbers.

And incredibly, God told them to seek the peace and well-being of Babylon where ultimately he had sent them into exile.

God even told them to pray for Babylon’s welfare.

For in Babylon’s peace and well-being, the Israelite’s would have their peace.

Then God promised that after 70 years he would bring them back to Jerusalem.

He essentially told them to take heart, a measure of solace, He had plans for them, plans for their good, plans for their future, plans to give them hope.

This is a good reminder for us.

We need to regularly remember that this world is not our home.

As the Apostle Peter would later remind his congregations of readers;

1 Peter 2:9-12 Amplified Bible

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people [at all], but now you are  God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers [in this world] to abstain from the sensual urges [those dishonorable desires] that wage war against the soul.  12  Keep your behavior excellent among the [unsaved] Gentiles [conduct yourself honorably, with graciousness and integrity], so that [a]for whatever reason they may slander you as evildoers, yet by observing your good deeds they may [instead come to] glorify God [b]in the day of visitation [when He looks upon them with mercy].

Just as Babylon was not the Jews’ final home, neither is this our final home.

Our home is heaven.

But like the ancient Israelite’s, we are to build our lives here for now.

We’re to seek the good of our nation, our churches, our friends and neighbors.

John 14:1-6 Amplified Bible

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and I will take you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. 4 And [to the place]  where I am going, you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him,  “[a]I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

We are to settle in, have generations of family, and build homes – temporarily.

We are to pray for the welfare, the well-being of where God will settle us down.

But we mustn’t forget that after “70 years” – sooner or later – God will come back, His Son, our Savior Jesus will take us unto our ultimate home – heaven.

Those are God’s plans for us.

But he has plans for us now too.

Fresh Fire: Becoming the Person God Has Called You to Be. 1 Corinthians 2:12

We sometimes get frustrated when people outside of Christ do not seem to be able to understand the teaching of Scripture.

However, we must not forget that there are two realities to the truth of Scripture that non-believers do not experience. 

First, the Holy Spirit, who inspired Scripture and uses Scripture to form us, also helps followers of Jesus understand the truth that God has given us.

Second, the truth of Scriptures often becomes more understandable as we obey it. The Holy Spirit is at work helping us understand the Scriptures he inspired!

Whether we might be rookies or veterans, let’s never approach our time in Bible study without asking for the Holy Spirit to make God’s truth known unto us!

Years ago, I remember hearing Campus Crusader founder Bill Bright teaching on the Holy Spirit. In his message, he talked about a man to whom he had been in the throes of witnessing to. One of the “Problems” with the Christian faith was he had tried to read the Bible several times but could not “figure it out.”

Then the man received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and went back to talk again with Dr. Bright about one week later. He had an amazing story to tell him.

During that weeks’ time, he said, it was as though somebody had re-written his Bible. Suddenly, he said, the Scriptures came alive to him. The understanding of them had broken into his thoughts as when quick lightning strikes the ground.

How had it happened? The Teacher – the Holy Spirit, had taken up residence in his soul. What had once been obscure and confusing drivel was now pulsating with most profound degrees, measures of meaning, encouragement and hope.

1 Corinthians 2:6-12Amplified Bible

6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those spiritually mature [believers who have teachable hearts and a greater understanding]; but [it is a higher] wisdom not [the wisdom] of this present age nor of the rulers and leaders of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom once hidden [from man, but now revealed to us by God, that wisdom] which God predestined before the ages to our glory [to lift us into the glory of His presence]. 8 None of the rulers of this age recognized and understood this wisdom; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but just as it is written [in Scripture],

“Things which the eye has not seen, and the ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, who obey Him, and who gratefully recognize the benefits that He has bestowed].”

10 For God has unveiled them and revealed them to us through the [Holy] Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things [diligently], even [sounding and measuring] the [profound] depths of God [the divine counsels and things far beyond human understanding]. 11 For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the [Holy] Spirit who is from God, so that we may know and understand the [wonderful] things freely given to us by God.

To be the person God has called you to be.

And that got me thinking. Yes dangerous, I know.

You see I believe that the Holy Spirit does do amazing things in people today.

I believe that right now He is doing stuff in each of us, to refine us, to change us, to bless us.

What I started thinking about was,

what if instead of becoming the person God has called me to be,

I had become the person I myself desired to be?

What kind of person would I be today if the Holy Spirit had not led me?

Where would I have been this morning if I had chosen not to allow the Spirit to lead me?

If God were not guiding you according to His plan, and His purpose, who would you have followed?

Who would have been your role model?

What would you be like if you could become anyone you could want to be?

Would you be a scientist or an artist?

Would you be a musician or a mime?

Would you be a best selling author or a teacher?

Would you be a butcher, baker or candlestick maker?

Would you be a politician?

Would you be a professional sports athlete?

Would you be a banker, an industrialist, a world leader?

Would you have been like some Greek mythological hero born of Hollywood?

If you could desire above all other possibilities to become anyone, would you be willing to become the humble servant person that God has called you to be?

Let’s face it, you are who you are, for a reason today you are you because you are you.

But, are you, all the you, you can be today?

Are you allowing the Spirt to work in you today?

What would your life be like if you allowed yourself to fully be the person God wants you to be?

What differences would there be in your life tomorrow if you allowed the Spirit to work in you today?

Today as part of this seasons Pentecost experience I want to encourage you, to genuinely challenge you, to examine where you are where you really want to be.

The verse I want you to focus on this day is

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (NIV) which says:

“God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no-one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

The NLT translates this verse:

It was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

For so many people in the world today there are times in life that nothing seems to happen, then times where everything is boring without sense or meaning.

So many people want to be someone else simply because they feel their own life is empty.

Be honest, in your own spiritual walk, have there been times when you have complained that everything is the same, no growth and no direction, yet when you have felt the Spirit prompt you to do something, you have chosen not to?

Maybe there have been times in your life when doubt has stopped you moving forward.

Stopped you from allowing the Holy Spirit to work in your life.

Maybe there have been times when you have asked why?

Maybe there are times when you have refused to ask yourself why?

So, let me ask you why.

From our text, let me form a question for you from the bible verses we have read.

Why when, we have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us – why do we choose to accept less than God has freely given us?

Why do we spend so much time desiring to be like someone else and ignore who God is calling us to be?

How can we move past the feeling that something is wrong and allow God to work in our lives today?

How can we have greater joy in our lives?

How can we be satisfied?

How can we be the people that God has called us to be?

The simple answer is we must allow the Spirit to work in our lives so that we can become the people God has called us to be.

Do you allow the Spirit to work in your life?

Are you thankful for the blessings God has freely given you to enjoy everyday?

When was the last time you thanked God for the beauty of His creation?

When was the last time you thanked God for what He is doing in your life?

When was the last time you thanked God for what He provides you with everyday? Your bed, your food, your clothes.

When was the last time you thanked God for His love, His grace, His Mercy?

When was the last time you allowed the Spirit to work in you and through you for God’s glory?

When was the last time you thanked God for the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?

When was the last time you asked the Spirit to work in your life to help you be the person God has called you to be?

It is true to say that God knows your past, God knows your today, and He knows your future.

You know your past, you are living in your today, and I’m sure you have a hope for your future.

Does your plan for the future align with God’s plan for your future?

Actually, does your plan for today align with God’s plan for you today?

So often we try and prepare for things in our own strength, and too often we wonder why things didn’t go according to our plan when we never stopped to find out what God’s perfect plan for us was.

The past, the present and the future belongs to God and we need to be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us into our destiny.

We must be open to the leading of the Spirit.

Are you willing to become the person God has called you to be by allowing the Spirit to work in you today?

Are you willing to give control of your life to God?

Are you willing to allow the full power of the Holy Spirit into your life, in your home, in your family, in your workplace.

We will never experience the full joy and contentment that God wants us to have if we do not allow the Holy Spirit to work in us.

We all need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.With His power our life can become a blessing to others.

With His power others will see and experience the love of Jesus Christ through us.

Today, do you consider your life to be a living witness for Christ?

Today, would you allow the Holy Spirit to help you share the truth of Jesus with others?

Friends, you may look at others as role models, as people you aspire to be like, are you willing to be the person God has called you to be?

Are you willing to allow God to use you to bring glory to Him?

Are you willing to open your life to the Holy Spirit and be a blessing to people you meet?

Remember we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.”

As Christians we received the Spirit who is from God and not of the world, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God

So that we might use the gifts and talents God has given us, so that we can be the People that God has called us to be.

God has called us to communicate the truth with others, are you sharing the truth?

You can do it verbally, you can do it in the written word, you can do it on Facebook or Twitter, but are you doing it?

Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you today?

Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to work in you today to become the person that God has called you to be?

Let me encourage you to become the person God has called you to be.

Allow the Holy Spirit to work in you today.

Share the Good News of God’s Saving work in your life.

Jesus, Giver of peace, I so easily get distracted when I’m trying to focus and hear your Holy Spirit. Help me quiet my mind in the middle of my busy life. Help me to pause and to make space to listen to the most important voice of all.

Empower me to be a good listener to the gentle whispers of your Spirit. Help me follow the example of Jesus, who would slip away into the evening or the early morning to be alone with you. Teach me to abide in you. Amen.

Savior Jesus, you sent the Holy Spirit to your disciples so they would have a helper and a guide at all times. I pray that you send to me your Holy Spirit to be my helper. May your Spirit pour light into my heart and make my spirit glow in your glory. I seek to understand and to stay in your word, oh Lord. Illuminate my heart with your Spirit. Gloria! In Excelsis Deo!
